Successful Hot Run Test of the Hot-Rolling Mill for Dongbu Steel in Korea

The hot run test of the hot-rolling mill constructed at Dongbu Steel Co., Ltd. in Korea began on schedule in the early morning of July 1, and the mill successfully produced a good first coil at its initial trial.
We began production of this mill after the order was received in July 2007, in an arrangement coordinated by the Mitsubishi Corporation. This mill is to be part of a thin slab hot-rolling line producing 2.5 million tons/year, with the hot rolling mill linked directly to the continuous casting facility (produced by the Italian company Danieli).

This success marks the entry into the integrated steelmaking business for Dongbu Steel, which previously specialized in cold rolling, making it the third such manufacturer in Korea following POSCO and Hyundai Steel. This is a big first step towards achieving the long-held ambitions of Dongbu Steel.

A large number of related persons, including the chairman of the Dongbu Group, were in attendance for the successful hot run test, and the event was reported in the local media. It was easy to feel the enthusiasm which Dongbu Steel has invested in this manufacturing line.

For Mitsubishi-Hitachi Metals Machinery as well, this was our first collaboration with the Industrial Systems Group of Hitachi Ltd. in a full-scale hot-rolling mill. This successful collaboration demonstrates the true capabilities of Mitsubishi-Hitachi Metals Machinery and Hitachi Ltd. in this field, and we expect to see growth in future business opportunities related to hot-rolling mills.

We are continuing to work together with the local supervisors and other related parties towards the completion of the performance verification tests.
