Received the Welding Process Engineering Award by the Technical Commission on Welding Processes of the Japan Welding Society

We received the Welding Process Engineering Award on August 5, 2009 for the "Super Deformation Joining and Its Application to Hot Endless Rolling" process which has been spent many years researching and developing before successfully creating an operational system. Super Deformation Joining (SDJ) is a newly-developed fast and highly reliable bar joining technology, which is a key technology for hot endless rolling. We believe that it was our success in creating a compact and stationary joining machine which led us to receive this award, and we would like to express our deep appreciation to everyone involved.

Joining equipment applying SDJ has been installed at the POSCO Pohang #2 hot rolling mill, and full-scale endless rolling operations began in January 2007. This equipment has verified the advantages of this technology, including greater productivity and higher quality, and this mill has so far performed endless rolling of up to 45 bars continuously and is producing 100,000 tons per month.

SDJ uses high-temperature conditions to instantaneously and simply join 2 bars together with the same level of strength as the base material.
