China Steel Corporation; No.1 Hot Rolling Mill Has Achieved One Hundred Million Tons of Production

On July 7, 2010, the No.1 Hot Strip Mill at China Steel Corporation in Taiwan (hereafter referred to as CSC) achieved more than one hundred million tons of total production since startup. A large ceremony was held at the CSC Works located in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, on July 30, 2010, to commemorate this great achievement. The CSC No.1 Hot Strip Mill was delivered by Mitsubishi-Hitachi Metals Machinery, Inc., Tokyo, Japan (whose corporate name was Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. at the time of delivery).

Mr.Yamasaki, President of our company who attended the ceremony, was a site supervisor during the initial construction of the CSC No.1 Hot Strip Mill facility. He was joined at the ceremony by CSC members who were young engineers at the time of the mill construction and who now hold important positions as CSC's high executive officers. Many fond memories were shared talking about those past years and the ceremony really warmed up.

The CSC No.1 Hot Strip Mill began operation in 1982, 36 months after signing of the construction contract in 1979. Since startup, the mill has undergone two (2) major upgrades to insure its excellent running condition; 1) An increase in production capacity project in 1987 (through the addition of a Roughing Mill completed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd.), and 2) a Downcoiler Upgrade Project of 2004 (completed by M-HMM). Actual performance of one hundred million tons of production in a time span of 28 years cannot be attained until reliable production facilities, excellent operation technique and finely tuned maintenance come together as one.

It is expected that the CSC No.1 Hot Strip Mill will continue to operate as a major production facility well into the future.
